A great label design can make your product — and a poor one can sink it. But designing labels for print is fundamentally different from designing for web, social media, or even print ads. Not every talented graphic designer understands the specific requirements of label printing. Here’s what to look for when hiring a freelancer for your product labels.
Print Experience Is Non-Negotiable
Your designer needs to understand CMYK color, bleed and safe zones, die lines, resolution requirements, and how to prepare files for production. A designer who works exclusively in digital or web design may not know any of this. Ask specifically about their experience designing for print — and for labels in particular, if possible.
Portfolio: Look for Packaging Work
Review their portfolio for packaging and label projects specifically. Designing a label for a curved bottle is different from designing a flat poster. The best label designers understand how their work will look applied to a real, three-dimensional container — including how text reads on a curve, how transparency effects work on clear materials, and how finishes like matte or gloss change the perceived look of their design.
Regulatory Awareness
If your product is in a regulated industry — food, supplements, cosmetics, cannabis, chemicals — your label must include specific legally required information. An experienced label designer will at least know that these requirements exist and will ask about them. A less experienced designer might deliver a beautiful design that has no room for the required nutrition panel or compliance text.
File Delivery
Make sure your designer delivers native, editable files (Adobe Illustrator .ai or .eps) in addition to print-ready PDFs. You own the design — you should have files you can modify in the future without hiring the same designer again. Avoid designers who only deliver JPEGs, PNGs, or Canva links.
Where to Find Label Designers
Platforms like 99designs, Dribbble, Behance, and Fiverr all have designers with packaging portfolios. Look for reviews from other product brands, and always ask for references from past label or packaging clients.
