Clear Labels: How to Get the “No Label” Look on Your Product Packaging

One of the biggest trends in product packaging is the “no-label” look — where the label itself is virtually invisible, and only your printed design appears on the container. This effect is achieved with clear film labels, most commonly made from clear BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene).

How Clear Labels Work

Clear labels use a transparent film as their base material. When applied to a smooth container — especially glass or clear plastic — the unprinted areas of the label blend seamlessly with the surface. Your logo, text, and graphics appear to be printed directly on the container itself.

The Role of White Ink

Here’s something many first-time buyers don’t realize: on a clear label, there is no white background. If you print a red logo on clear film, you’ll get a translucent red — the container color shows through. To get solid, opaque colors, a layer of white ink must be printed behind your design. This is often called “CMYK + White” printing.

This gives you creative flexibility. You can have some areas fully opaque (backed with white ink) and other areas completely transparent, creating a striking contrast between solid graphics and a see-through background.

Which Products Look Best with Clear Labels?

Clear labels work best on smooth, uniform surfaces. Glass bottles, clear plastic jars, and smooth squeeze tubes are ideal. Products where the contents are visually appealing — honey, juices, sauces, lotions, candles — benefit especially because the consumer can see the product inside.

Clear labels are less effective on heavily textured surfaces, corrugated packaging, or containers with seams, as imperfections beneath the label become visible.

Design Tips for Clear Labels

Keep your design clean and intentional. Decide early which areas should be opaque and which should be transparent. Provide your printer with a clear indication of where white ink should be placed. And always request a printed proof applied to your actual container — the final effect is impossible to judge on a computer screen.
