The word “waterproof” gets thrown around loosely in the label industry. Some labels resist a splash but fall apart when submerged. Others survive ice buckets, condensation, and pressure washing. The difference comes down to four components working together: material, adhesive, ink, and finish.
Material: Start with Film, Not Paper
Paper absorbs water. Even coated paper will eventually wrinkle, bubble, or delaminate when exposed to sustained moisture. Truly waterproof labels start with a synthetic film material — most commonly BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene). BOPP is inherently waterproof because it’s plastic. It won’t absorb moisture, swell, or break down when wet.
Adhesive: It Has to Stay Stuck
A waterproof label isn’t useful if it peels off the container when it gets wet. Standard adhesives can lose their grip in moisture-heavy environments. For truly waterproof performance, you need a permanent adhesive rated for wet conditions — one that maintains its bond through condensation, refrigeration, freezing, and direct water contact.
Ink: Fade and Smear Resistance
Water-based inks can run or fade when exposed to moisture. UV-cured inks — used in digital and flexographic label printing — bond to the film surface and resist water, fading, and smearing. This is standard in professional label printing, but worth confirming with your supplier.
Finish: The Protective Layer
A laminate or UV coating over the printed surface adds an additional barrier against water, abrasion, and scuffing. Laminate, in particular, seals the entire printed surface under a plastic film, making the label highly resistant to both moisture and physical damage.
When Do You Need Waterproof Labels?
Any product that will encounter water, condensation, humidity, or ice: beverages, frozen foods, bath and beauty products, cleaning supplies, outdoor products, and anything stored in a cooler or refrigerator. If there’s any chance your label will get wet, choose BOPP film with a permanent adhesive and a protective finish.
